442’s re-enter service
SWR announced today (10/6/2019) that the first class 442 to be re-introduced into passenger service arrived at Waterloo shortly before 07.57. The service was driven by Bournemouth driver John Gardiner, the son of Jack Gardiner who worked the inaugural class 442 service from Waterloo to Weymouth on 14 April 1988. John completed today’s journey using the same EP key used by his farther when he made the non-stop journey in 1 hour 59 minutes all those years ago.
The addition of the first refurbished class 442 10 car train has allowed SWR to introduce the planned 06.28 Southampton Airport Parkway to Waterloo and the 18.48 Waterloo to Poole services.
Sam Simpson was at Waterloo and able to photograph the units.
