Hornby – new Bil-Hal hybrid and a Bil
Just before Christmas Hornby’s R3699 Bil-Hal hybrid unit 2611 in BR(S) green became available, but too late for most to acquire before shops closed for several days. For some reason Hornby are calling this unique unit a 2-HIL, which as far as I can establish was never an official designation as it was regarded as part of the 2Hal fleet. The 2-HIL moniker being purely an enthusiast nickname, unless the knowledgeable and resourceful SEG membership can prove otherwise. Of course this version represents a quick-win new model for Hornby as it uses tooling from two existing models. Hornby’s 2Bil and 2Hal models are highly regarded as they are fine mouldings are very well decorated, though coming from Hornby’s “design-clever” era they are rather light on features. However, this does result in these two car units costing about half of Bachmann’s new high specification two car Class 158 model.
Also now available (not pictured) is R3700 2Bil unit 2152 in Southern Railway olive livery.
