Isle of Wight Electrics - Three Glimpses in Time

The view of Ryde St. John's Road from the signalbox. The car round the back of the works was S25S, from 046, which had been damaged by fire. 046 was then running as a three car unit with 044. S25S was subsequently scrapped. |

3Vec 031 and 4Tis 041 arriving at Brading, the loop still in use, and note that in 1976 at Brading BR Corporate Image colours have yet to replace SR green. |

031 and 041 again, now approaching the important station at Sandown, which is up a hill above the town. At this time the station still had a full complement of buildings on the up platform (on the left in this photograph). The signal box was quite high, in order that the signalman could see over the platform canopy. |

For some the railway celebrity on the island - its only remaining locomotive. Diesel shunter 05001 (D2554), used for PW trains, stabled at Sandown. This was the only survivor in BR service because it complied with the restricted loading gauge without modification. The O5 class had been acquired for the Eastern, North Eastern and Scottish Regions, and prior to service on ths island D2554 had been based at Harwich. All others had been withdrawn by the end of 1968. |

044 and three car 046 (see above) arriving at Shanklin, then the end of the line which originally went on to Ventnor. In 1976 the up platform was still in use. |

We are cheating a bit here and advancing the timeframe by two weeks short of four years. From the SEG Sales Foxley Slides Collection, slide 87 shows 041 at Brading on a Shanklin to Ryde service on the 7th June 1980. |
