As in previous years, in 2011 the Southern Railway's Electrical Control Room at Woking, built as part of the Portsmouth Direct electrification, was open to the public as part of the annual "Open House" event in England. On Saturday 10th September, Lester Hayes took advantage of the event to visit. (left) Exterior of the building.

(left) Detail of the display. The webmaster was not supplied with details, but it is interpreted that power is supplied from HV distribution at Bracknell, but Whitmoor and Buckhurst are only track paralleling locations. |

This is a 2,500 Amp circuit breaker dating from the 1936 when it was installed as part of the Portsmouth Direct Electrification. It was overhauled in 1967 as part of an upgrade for the Bournemouth electrification. Although it has some parts missing, some others from the same period are still in use, although many have been replaced by higher capacity circuit breakers as part of the recent power supply upgrades. |
