Southern Electric Modelling Gallery -
4mm scale mass-produced ready to run EMUs

Below are illustrations of 4mm scale EMUs  produced ready-to-run by major manufacturers.  Not many types have been produced and there is yet to be a super detailed high quality model produced.  Details of how to contact manufacturers and suppliers can be found in our modelling contacts section.

Trix Twin pre-war "Southern" EMU
Trix Twin Southern Electric unit - click to view larger picture

Produced for the then burgeoning Trix Twin system this model was also known as the "Portsmouth" . We have been unable to establish further details other than it was introduced between 1937 and 1939. It clearly is not an accurate model of a 4Cor unit, whereas other contemporary models in the Trix Twin range appear to be a better resemblance to the prototype on which they were based.

Hugar pre-war "Southern" EMU
Hugar pre-war Southern EMU sets

Hugar models were produced by Hugh Gardner on a cottage industry basis, most of which were wooden scenic items such as goods sheds, signal boxes and stations. Not much is known about this model train resembling Pul/Pan/Cit stock other than it is made of metal and wood.

Triang R156+R225 ... "2"
Triang EMU - click to view larger picture
Between 1957 and 1964 Triang produced a Southern EMU model which has variously been described as a "Bil", "Nol" or "Sub". In fact it is none of those. The cars modelled, S1052S+S1057S, are actually a freelance 1920/30s design suburban EMU.  The model is very crude by today's standard but it was a "state of the art toy" when it first appeared.  It features a hefty motor bogie which will probably go on forever which also had serrated wheels intended to aid adhesion but actually had the opposite effect as they gathered gunk!  It also featured (at least in early versions) protruding axle ends in unpowered bogies.  The key feature was an illuminated headcode box in the motored car only.  The cars are far from being scale length.  The model pictured is a repainted example picked up at a Swapmeet for £40.   The dreaded serrated wheels have been replaced by nearer to scale nickel silver wheels obtained from Modelspares Burnley (see contacts list).

Hornby Dublo 2250/3250+4150 ... BR Class 501 marketed as 2EPB
Hornby Dublo EMU - click to view larger picture
Appearing between 1962 and 1965, this was the most desired model of the day for Southern Electric fans - well the few that could afford Hornby Dublo prices!  Although the cars numbered S65326+S77511 are of a BR 2EPB this model is actually of a LMR 57ft 501 unit.  It features a mighty ringfield motor but only driving one axle and was fitted with traction tyres.  This makes it capable of hauling itself but not much else, though that is all that was required of the real size units.  The model pictured was bought in the nick of time just as the Hornby Dublo company went bankrupt, though financial sacrifices had to be made to acquire it!

Wrenn Brighton Belle
Wrenn Brighton Belle power car in Umber and Cream

Regret larger pictures are not available for these two models

Produced by G&R Wrenn, overall between 1976 and 1992, the power cars were from tooling produced by Wrenn and are not former Hornby Dublo models, however the trailer cars relied upon former Hornby Dublo Pullman car tooling.

Excluding limited editions, production of umber and cream versions is distinguished by two phases, earlier models (prior to 1986) having brown table tops and later producton - as illustrated - having painted white tops.

Blue & Grey trailer cars appear to have been available ahead of the matching power cars being produced, but all have white table tops.

In the opinion of the reviewer these models have a "collectable" value well in excess of the quality of the model, which clearly shows its 1960s/70s origin. The going rate (depending upon state of model and box) for non limited edition power car pairs being £80-£250 (blue & grey) and £170 - £275 (umber and cream).
