DB ICE 3 train on show at St. Pancras International

ICE 3MF 4685 in Platform 5 at St Pancras International 19th October 2010

Both to publicise and pave the way for a service by DB between St. Pancras International and Germany from December 2013, ICE 3MF unit 4685, the last of a batch of six adapted to work in France, visited the London terminus on 19th October 2010.

The week before ICE 3M unit 4610 had undergone testing in the Channel Tunnel, though it is believed the tunnel testing was not done under the units' own power.

Legend celebrating the visit
This unit is named Schwäbisch Hall
Presaging a new era at St Pancras International From the Siemens Velaro range, the multi-voltage ICE 3M Class 406 units are built to a smaller loading gauge to suit many European countries (though not the UK, except on HS1) and are not compliant with fire safety regulations applying to the Channel Tunnel. However, forthcoming ICE 3T units will, and it is intended that these will be used on services to and from London.
The pan is up for shore power

The unit was powered to London by two locomotives, however the pantograph head was up in the station to supply "shore" power.
