1001 about to decend the steep gradient to Exter St Davids

On Saturday 25th June 2005  Hastings Diesels Limited ran two tours in one departing Waterloo for two of the Southern's former western outposts - Exeter and Barnstaple - albeit via the Western Route from Reading to Exeter St Davids. There London-Exeter portion of the tour was called the West Country Cruiser.  Here 1001 has reversed in Exeter Central and is departing back to the St Davids station.

There then followed a subsidiary tour called the Tarka Special from Exeter St Davids to Barnstaple. Here 1001 awaits departure to Barnstaple.

1001 at what is now the end of the line - Barnstaple.  Soon all hope of ever relaying track beyond Barnstaple will be gone as the road bridge behind the camera will this summer be demolished.
