The Mid Norfolk Railway ran a "South London Weekend" over the weekend of 21st/22nd May 2011. This is an illustrated report from 21st May by GB. 3Cig 1497 was in use, hauled and propelled by class 73 locomotives. 50019 "Ramillies" was working with a rake of blue/grey Mark 2 carriages, departing Dereham every two hours 09:30 to 17:30 and Wymondham Abbey 10:30 to 18:30. 1497 worked alternate hours 10:30 to 18:30 from Dereham and 11:30 to 17:30 and 19:20 from Wymondham Abbey, but not the round trip at 12:30 from Dereham, which was advertised to be a "demonstration freight train". In addition, preserved London Transport buses RT3902 (red) and RF626 (green) were working hourly between Dereham and County School , the eventual northern terminus of the line. Trains arrive at Wymondham from Cambridge at 16 minutes past the hour, so it required a VERY brisk walk to Wymondham Abbey to catch the 11:30. There are no signs to the Mid Norfolk station, which is a scaffolding and timber platform, with a portable building as the booking office. There was no time for photographs before the train left, and the light was completely wrong by the time I got back at 17:10. Advertised motive power was 73210, but 73109 waiting to propel 1497 to Dereham. It moved to the Mid Norfolk on 12th May, together with 86101 (which was in sidings at Dereham). The 86101 hauled 73109 to Norwich , then 73109 hauled 86101 to Dereham. Upon arrival at Dereham I went up to County School on RT3902, so I missed departure of the "freight" working, which turned out to be 73210 plus MLV 68004. I was back at Dereham when they arrived from Wymondham, but they went straight into sidings south of the station, so no photograph. 68004 is green with full yellow ends. 73109 and 1497 were stabled north of Dereham station. They came back in after 50019 had departed with the 13:30 to Wymondham. Having disposed of 68004, 73210 was coupled onto 73109, so the 14:30 to Wymondham was double-headed. Upon arrival back at Dereham 73210 ran round, so the 16:30 departure was top and tail. I did not stay to see what they did on the 18:30. |

The class 101 DMU stabled in the bay is more typical of BR trains that served Dereham, but it does have a Southern connection. The L set number and NSE flash reveal it to be a former Reading unit, that would have worked on the Reading to Tonbridge line. |
