EMU Days at the East Kent Railway

A pictorial report by Gregory Beecroft

The East Kent Railway, with our friends the EPB Preservation Group, held their EMU Days for 2008 on 20th and 21st September. Gregory Beecroft attended on the second day.

Trains were hauled by D4113/09025, but not all the way in the case of the 12:45 from Shepherdswell, which comprised 68001+7105.  For this working the 09 was detached just south of Golgotha Tunnel and ran light to Eythorne.  68001 then hauled 7105 the rest of the way to Eythorne.  As they were operating to the regular DMU timetable, this resulted in late running.  Back at Shepherdswell there was then some very complicated shunting, to exchange 68001+7105 for 68008+68002+5759, so the 14:00 service did not leave until 14:45.

It is not unknown for railway modellers to paint their rolling stock with different liveries on either side, if the stock will only be seen on one side at a time, to give the illusion of running more stock than they actually have. Some items of stock on the East Kent Railway were displayed with different liveries on either side, though whether this is an intentional feature or merely that repaints were only part done, is not entirely clear! Above left, their diesel shunter in green as D4113 and above right the other side in Connex livery - the livery the loco last wore in TOC service - as 09025.
