PROJECT
The Southern Electric Group was jointly planning (with the EPB Preservation Group) the establishment of a Southern Electric Railway Museum and a potential suitable site at the former West Worthing depot had been identified. The details of this project are outlined in an address "The Future of SEG Preservation" given by SEG Chairman Peter Staveley in 2003. For further details please click here to read a transcript of this address.
The West Worthing depot site had previously been earmarked by Network Rail in connection with the Thameslink [2000] project. The Southern Electric museum project would only be offered potential use of the site if it was no longer required for railway use. In August 2007 the Government announced that Thameslink [2000] project would finally proceed and in January 2008 demolition of the former depot building began. As Network Rail have not applied, as per condition 26 of their network licence, to dispose of the site it is thought that the site is being prepared for further railway use. Thus the museum project will not be going ahead at this location.
However, since 2003 there has been only muted support for the museum project and plans had already been amended for it initially to be secure preservation base, with periodic open days fulfilling the museum element. Any possibility of a Southern Electric preservation base and museum project being re-launched at another site will depend upon there being offers of significant support.
