Cep Era Railtour

1697 at Sandwich One aspect of this tour that may have confused other travellers at the time was that platform indicators at stations en route were showing the train as being the xx.xx to Dover Priory when in many places the train was travelling away from Dover.

Still with portion 2, 1697 pauses again, not taking a break with Kit Kat but at Sandwich!

1698 passing through Dover Portion 3 took unit 1168 departing Dover Priory at 11.36 and taking the route Deal - Sandwich - Minster - Sturry - Canterbury West - Ashford International (reverse) - Folkestone Central - Dover Priory - Deal (reverse) - arriving back at Dover Priory at 1354.  In this picture 1168 is passing through Dover Priory on its way to Deal.

1699 now at the buffer stops at Victoria A weak winter sun came out at Dover 30 minutes before the tour departed back to London Victoria, again prompt at 14.58.  Another fast run followed, including reaching 99.3 mph down the bank to Hildenborough, and it was intended to break the record for 400 series stock on this route. Unfortunately the 69 minute journey missed the record by about 3 minutes, however this record was set when the CEPs were a lot younger, with the benefit of additional power from two MLVs and on a Sunday.

On its return from Kent the unit formation had been turned with 1699 now being at the London end.

This tour went very well and raised over £9000 for two selected charities - The Railway Children and Kent Air Ambulance.  SET and Network Rail staff joined in the fun making it a happy train and an enjoyable experience.  Southeastern Trains are to be congratulated - grateful thanks from us enthusiasts.
