Slam's Final Months - Stewarts Lane

These pages are an unashamed wallow in nostalgia recalling and celebrating the final months of slam door unit operation on the former Southern Region!

We now move on to a selection of pictures taken at Stewarts Lane Depot, which these days serves a number of different purposes including the commissioning and de-commissioning of units.  Access by the public to Stewarts Lane is rightly not permitted, however we have be sent some photographs from contributors who have access.  In this exterior view from August 2005 are (amongst other stock) 3489, 1859 and 3487 plus 73202 and 9104.

partially sheeted over motor brake Pullman third

The webmaster admits that in formatting dozens of photographs at one sitting he almost missed this in the above panorama, but what is this sheeted-over car hiding behind 3489?  One of the little seen or photographed motor brake Pullman third cars of the VSOE reserve fleet!

3842 being de-commissioned

Inside at Stewarts Lane, Vep 3842 being de-commissioned prior to being scrapped.  Note the pickup shoe and height limit beam (frequently incorrectly referred to as a shoebeam, which is not the purpose nor the correct term for post 1963 stock) has been removed from the leading bogie.  Note this is an early driving trailer fitted with lifting lugs whereas the remainder of the unit was of the later build without.

3486 between tow different types of Juniper stoc

On 17th November 2005 Vep 3486 was sandwhiched between more modern stock, the Southern Region's two types of Juniper units, and within sight of some older, but extensively rebuilt, premium loco hauled coaching stock!
