Slam's Final Months - Veps

These pages are an unashamed wallow in nostalgia recalling and celebrating the final months of slam door unit operation on the former Southern Region!

3450 at Nunhead working the 15.4 Faversham to Victoria service on the 22nd August 2005

This is a terrific action photograph of what has been for many years perhaps a mundane and familiar sight, but not for much longer so it is worth recording for posterity.  A 4Vep doing what it and its siblings have for over three decades done well - carrying passengers (even if not in the most luxurious of accommodation) around the south east of England.  Here 3450 is at Nunhead working the 15.4 Faversham to Victoria service on the 22nd August 2005.

73201 powering 3417 and 1497 throuh Hinton Admiral

Who would think it could have happened on the mainline in 2005?  South West Trains undertook driver training sessions between Monday 22nd to Friday 26th August using their "thunderbird" 73201 and one of their remaining slam door units.  The route was Bournemouth TRSMD (10+32) - Poole (10+42 to 11+03) - Eastleigh (12+16 to12+28) - Poole (13+27 to 13+56) - Bournemouth TRSMD (14+07).  Remarkably on Friday 26th both 3417 and 1497 were roped into this duty, as seen here travelling through Hinton Admiral.

slam door trains in parallel at London Bridge

This is definitely a once familiar sight never to be seen anymore.  Two parallel slam door workings - as seen on the 26th August 2005 at London Bridge at 08.50, the train on the left being for Charing Cross and the train on the right for Cannon Street.

3505 at London Bridge about to leave on 1st September 2005

Veps may not have been everyone's favourite unit but many of us will miss them now they are gone.  Here 3505 is about to leave London Bridge with the 17.45 to Eastbourne on the 1st September 2005.
