Gatwick Express "Heritage" Stock - Final Passenger Workings

the better way to travel! capturing what was once a familiar view for the last time

(left) whilst the standard class accommodation was packed in both directions the first class was a haven of tranquility, and (right) just a small selection of the many enthusiasts who turned out on a weekday to witness and/or travel on the last scheduled runs.

The immaculately turned out formation for these final workings was as follows:
(Gatwick end) 73208, 8206 (72629 + 72505), 8311 (72620  + 72710 + 72621), 8202 (72617 + 72501), 9110, 73202 (London end).  Driver Trevor Finch was in charge of the outward trip when 73208 and 9110 were under power with 73202 cut out and driver Mick Seabrook the return journey when both EDLs were under power with 9110 cut out.  Between these gentlemen there is over 90 years worth of railway experience.  Departure from Victoria platform 13 was at 13.01.02 and the slow line through Redhill was taken (with progress slowed due to an emergency speed restriction north of Redhill) with the arrival at platform 1 Gatwick Airport at 13.32.07.  On the return journey departure was at13.49.58 and the train returned to platform 8 at Victoria at 14.27.45 via Pouparts Junction, Longhedge Junction and the Battersea Reversible Line to Battersea Pier Junction having earlier taken the Up Victoria Slow line from Windmill Bridge Junction to Selhurst Junction.

Grateful thanks are due to Gatwick Express for organising and marking this event.  The condition of the stock was a great credit to the staff at Stewarts Lane and the onboard staff and management made the journeys an enjoyable experience to remember.  Thanks are also due to Network Rail and the British Transport Police for accommodating this event whilst a major security alert across London was in progress.   This proves that normal life can and should go on!
