Gatwick Express Mk1/2 finals |
| The final scheduled passenger workings of Gatwick Express Mk1/2 slam door stock were on Thursday 28th July. For photographs and an account of these last workings please click here. The slam door stock was then retained for a while as emergency cover. Due to a shortage of Class 460 units a Mk2 set was in service during the week of 19th-23rd September 2005 and also intermittently in the evenings of subsequent weeks. Two former South West Trains class 458s units 8001 and 8002 have been acquired (arriving at Stewarts Lane on 2nd September 2005) to provide additional cover. They did not enter service quickly, requiring some internal conversion for Gatwick Express use plus a dispensation order to continue to run with some facilities which do not meet current disability regulations. It is understood that when they do finally come into service the class 458 units will be run both coupled as an eight car unit with the gangway between the units for emergency use only and also singly. Gatwick Express has also retained electro-diesel 73202 as a "thunderbird". After a long period out of use the slam door final stock left Stewarts Lane in February 2006 - 8206/8311/9110 for the Vale of Glamorgan Railway on the 20th and 9104 for The Spa Valley Railway some time the same week. |
