Southern Belle Railtour

Following pick ups at Dorchester, Wareham, Poole and Bournemouth there was a scheduled non-stop run to Clapham Junction. 3 Cig 1497 was pulling into Brockenhurst as the "Southern Belle" passed through, with much sounding of horns. Was it coincidence that the scheduled passing time was exactly the arrival time of the Lymington train?

There was the novelty of passing through Southampton without stopping. Such good progress was being made that the tour was checked approaching Winchester because it was catching up with the preceding train from Weymouth.

This is one thing the commemoration is all about. If there is one thing Veps are good at it is doors!

waiting to return The tour getting ready for the return journey.  Southern's 4 Cig 1866 will be leading all the way to Ramsgate and then back to London Bridge. However, in terms of mileage and duration (if the "Control Special" run back from London Bridge is included) 4 Cep 1698 spent the greater amount in the lead.

next stop Clapham Junction Bournemouth (up)

A seven minute stop at Bournemouth on the return journey gave photographers the time to dash to platform 3 to get a decent angle.  The next stop on the tour is Clapham Junction.

Bournemouth station indicator Not a destination regularly seen on the indicators at Bournemouth!  Given the limited number of stops it is good that the toilets on the train are  working.

no longer a familiar sight Roofs of Mk1 carriages have been a regular sight at Bournemouth since the early 1950s, first as locomotive hauled coaches and then, from the end of steam, as multiple units. However, the only Mk1 roofs regularly seen here these days are those of the two 3 Cigs working the Lymington Branch travelling to and from Bournemouth TRSMD.
