Slam Door Gala Weekend In celebration of the sterling service of Southern Region Mk1 EMUs since 1956 South West Trains, in association with The Railway Magazine and the Southern Electric Group, held a "Slam Door Gala"over the weekend of 14th & 15th August 2004. All three types of Mk1 EMU remaining with SWT, 4 Cep and 4 Cig and 4 Vep, were especially diagrammed between Waterloo - Portsmouth and Waterloo - Southampton. Though these units were still in everyday service it was expected at the time that the remaining SWT Cep units would be withdrawn later in that month. Thus this was one of the last concentrated opportunities to observe, ride in and photograph this stock. To enhance the occasion SWT were, where it was technically possible, displaying on platform passenger information displays not only when a particular service was being worked by a slam door unit but also the unit number. Well done and thanks SWT! A special rover fare was offered, by which any SWT station - Southampton cheap day return ticket was valid for unlimited travel all day on SWT services within the originating SWT station - Portsmouth - Southampton triangle. |

This is what it is all about ... will future generations of travellers understand what these were used for?
