Southern's Mk1 EMUs - the very last run
26
th November 2005

At Lewes the train waited in platform 1 for some seven minutes for the 12.14 departure to Brighton to pass through. With the kind assistance of the guard, the last passenger to board was a Mr. Colin Watts who is probably the last passenger ever to board a timetabled mainline MK1 EMU service. Similarly, in undertaking the signalling of the shunt move at Lewes, signalman Colin Packham (of Lewes Signal Box) became the last signalman to witness their own signalling move of a passenger carrying mainline Mk1 EMU service.

activity in platform 1 at Lewes The seven minute wait at Lewes afforded a good opportunity to take photographs!

The last slam door train serving Lewes at Platform 1 As the formation is about to reverse the special headboard will not be on the front of the train for its arrival in Brighton.   This is the last slam door EMU service to call at Lewes.

The train approaching Lewes for the fourth time since 09.19 Having reversed on the line from Southerham Junction to Lewes the train re-enters Lewes station (but does not stop) on its final leg to Brighton.

12 Vep crossing the London Road viaduct, shot taken from a vantage point high above Lovers Walk The size we are able to reproduce photographs on this website (for download time reasons) does not do justice to the original photograph which is considerably more panoramic and impressive.  A passenger carrying Mk1 EMU enters Brighton station (here from across the London Road Viaduct) for the very last time.
