Southern's Mk1 EMUs - the very last run
26
th November 2005

Final arrival was into platform 7 at Brighton where enthusiasts appeared at a loss as to what to do next!  It was originally thought that the units were due to go from Brighton station straight to Newhaven Marine for short-term storage pending withdrawal, however they went to Lovers Walk to be reformed with other units. (The units were eventually moved ECS to Newhaven Marine via Brighton station at 11.30 on Tuesday 29th November). They will soon go to Stewarts Lane for removal of shoegear prior to being moved for scrapping.

Many grateful thanks are due to Southern for arranging this final run with enthusiasts in mind and heartfelt thanks to all who have crewed and maintained these splendid trains that have been worked hard and served travellers in the South East of England so well for over 4 decades. The sentiment on the headboard says it all.......

enthusiasts at a loss what to do next? Well what do we (enthusiasts) do now ???   For slam door EMUs there is always the Lymington branch and certain heritage railways.  Then on the sliding door front there is the impending withdrawal of South West Trains' class 458 units and maybe after that Southeastern Trains class 508 units, NOT TO MENTION photographing the myriad of internal differences in Southern's Electrostar units.....(Is the webmaster a nerd or a railway historian ?  Answers on a back of a large cheque made payable to your favourite EMU preservation group please!  Ways to donate to SEG Preservation)

three generations of units at the buffer stops at Brighton One last chance to record three generations of units side by side could, quite rightly, not be resisted. Left to right the line up is 377445, 31942, 377320 and 423535.

farewell! And so the ECS departs for Lovers Walk.

Well who would have thought that the lowly and often unloved, but functional and hard working, Veps would have the honour of running the last mainline slam door EMU service?  (Well they are, as a class, the youngest of their generation.....)
