Southern Mk1 finals |

4 Cig 1866 approaching Newhaven
Harbour working the 18.43 Seaford-Lewes service |
| The last day of scheduled Mk1 workings by Southern was Friday 19th
August. For photographs and an account of the final scheduled workings please click here. Substitutions for
newer stock (subject to driver's traction knowledge and availability of a guard) had
taken place almost every day with some regular workings emerging until the last actual day of workings Saturday 26th November, with one return service between Brighton and Victoria run by 400 series units. Thereafter Southern's remaining Mk1 EMUs were stored pending disposal.
This is believed to be the "active" Southern Mk1 fleet at the close
of play: The following workings happened during the final few weeks: Saturday 5th November No data Sunday 6th November No public workings 10+15 Hove Yard Lovers Walk 3490 + 3514 + 3535 Monday 7th November 06:33 Littlehampton - Victoria 1805 + 1866 + 3535 Tuesday 8th November 06.33 Littlehampton - Victoria 1805 + 1866 + 3535 Wednesday 9th November 06.33 Littlehampton - Victoria 07.01 Littlehampton - Victoria Thursday 10th November 06.33 Littlehampton Victoria 3490 + 3514 + 3535 07.47 Brighton - Victoria 16.24 Hove - Victoria 11.12 Brighton - Seaford Friday 11th November: 06.33 Littlehampton Victoria 07+05 Hove Yard - Brighton 16+24 Hove Yard Victoria Saturday 12th November 07+05 Lovers Walk - Hove Sunday 13th November No public workings Monday 14th November 06:33 Littlehampton - Victoria 07:47 Brighton - Victoria 16+25 LoversWalk Victoria Tuesday 15th November 06.33 Littlehampton Victoria 05+00 Lovers Walk - Brighton 16+24 Lovers Walk Victoria Wednesday 16th November 06.33 Littlehampton - Victoria Thursday 17th November 07.47 Brighton Victoria 16+24 Hove - Victoria Friday 18th November due Saturday 19th November Sussex Slammer Railtour followed by Sunday 20th November No public workings Monday 21st November 06.33 Littlehampton to Victoria Tuesday 22nd November 06.33 Littlehampton - Victoria Wednesday 23rd November No public workings Thursday 24th November No public workings Friday 25th November No public workings Saturday 26th November |

On the penultimate day of
scheduled slam door workings Ian Docwra and two colleagues took the 17.17 Victoria to
Seaford/Eastbourne as far as Lewes where the train was split and (above left) the
Eastbourne portion was headed by 4Vep 3514 in Southern livery. Ian and colleagues then
travelled to Brighton to await the 20.04 arrival from Seaford (above right) which used the
unit (4Cig 1805) which had headed the 17.17 out of Victoria. They clearly had better
weather than was encountered by those travelling on the final day of scheduled workings!
