Engineering work at Clapham Junction over Easter

The line between Wimbledon and East Putney - the first surface route to be electrified by the London & South Western Railway - currently only sees three service trains daily, one of which does not run Sundays and all are late at night or in the early morning. However, during the engineering work at Clapham Junction the line saw frequent (non-stopping) trains as this was the diversionary route which slow services took to and from the main line at Wimbledon. Further details of changes to normal routes follow below. The above two photographs show down workings through East Putney on Good Friday, left 5725 to Shepperton and right 450040 to Basingstoke. Below shows two up workings from, left 5714 and right 5733, both from Woking.

To accommodate the engineering work at Clapham Junction there were significant changes to normal routings as the main and slow lines between Clapham Junction and Wimbledon were, in effect, closed. Only services to and from Reading and Windsor retained some semblance of normality, though with many other trains using the "Windsor lines" to and from Waterloo much threading was required. Services from the Exeter, Weymouth and Portsmouth lines were routed via Addlestone and Egham. Up West of England services were observed running via the Hounslow loop - giving the rare opportunity for traveling on diesel traction on this line - whilst down workings were via Richmond. Stopping services from Poole and Salisbury only ran as far as Basingtoke as did trains from Portsmouth via Eastleigh. Alton line services attached to Basingstoke locals from Woking, this combined working then running to Waterloo via East Putney. Haslemere locals only worked as far as Woking. Wimbledon was the terminus for Guildford via Epsom and Chessington services. Platform 6 at Wimbledon was used for terminating workings whilst platform 7 was used for through South West Trains services to and from Basingstoke, Woking and Shepperton. Hounslow loop services were diverted beyond Hounslow to Twickenham (reverse) and then terminated at Kingston. Kingston loop travelers had to use Shepperton and Hounslow loop workings and change where necessary. Shuttle services ran from Surbiton to Hampton Court and on the Guildford New Line. Travelers from Dorking had to fall back on Southern services. Rail replacement buses ran between Clapham Junction and Wimbledon via Earlsfield and Virginia Water and Weybridge.
