Mitcham Eastfields

With various schemes for a station at Eastfields dating back to at least 1938, this new station finally opened to passengers on 2nd June 2008 with the official ceremonial opening occurring over a month later on 10th July 2008. Situated between Streatham and Mitcham Junction, this development cost £6 million and is the 50th station in the UK to be opened or re-opened since 1997. This station is to a modular design which is constructed off-site, reducing disruption to residents and rail users. It is designed to minimise energy consumption and for ready access by those with ambulatory difficulties. It is served by frequent Southern and First Capital Connect services.

The photographer, who whilst employed by consultants PBA, undertook a commission on behalf of London Borough of Merton for the preliminary design of the station's layout. This preliminary design has since been worked through detailed design stages into construction and the completed station. Since that initial design work the only significant overall change appears to the addition of the footbridge. These photographs were taken two days before the official opening which was conducted by Railway Minister Tom Harris.

A general view of the level crossing, station building and up platform A general view of the level crossing, ticket office and up platform. The yellow box hatching on the crossing was only recently added; this being due to previous a omission on the level crossing orders.
The ticket office Temporary generators and site offices
(above left) The station's minimalist open booking hall and single ticket window. The open booking hall provides only the most basic of shelter from inclement weather. (above right) Once the construction works are complete the two diesel generators in the foreground will be replaced by cycle racks and the site offices beyond will be removed.
The up platform looking towards the ticket office The up platform as seen from the adjacent footbridge. If the platforms need to be extended beyond their current 8-car length then both this and a second footbridge south of the station would need to be rebuilt /repositioned.
Up side mobility entrance Train departing for St. Albans
(above left) There are two mobility accessible access points to each platform, this is on the up side and is the station's most northerly entrance. Unfortunately the mobility access stops at the kerbstone. Despite this kerbstone it appears the up platform has already become a shortcut for cyclists!
(above right) 319438, lead by 319434, departs with the 12:18 to St. Albans.
