With various schemes for a station at Eastfields dating back to at least 1938, this new station finally opened to passengers on 2nd June 2008 with the official ceremonial opening occurring over a month later on 10th July 2008. Situated between Streatham and Mitcham Junction, this development cost £6 million and is the 50th station in the UK to be opened or re-opened since 1997. This station is to a modular design which is constructed off-site, reducing disruption to residents and rail users. It is designed to minimise energy consumption and for ready access by those with ambulatory difficulties. It is served by frequent Southern and First Capital Connect services.

The photographer, who whilst employed by consultants PBA, undertook a commission on behalf of London Borough of Merton for the preliminary design of the station's layout. This preliminary design has since been worked through detailed design stages into construction and the completed station. Since that initial design work the only significant overall change appears to the addition of the footbridge. These photographs were taken two days before the official opening which was conducted by Railway Minister Tom Harris.
