Blackfriars Re-opens After 2 Months Closure

All photographs are © Lester Hayes

Blackfriars (Network Rail) station was closed between 20th November 2010 and 16th January 2011, with trains passing through for the most part, to enable a major stage of the station's redevelopment to be implemented. Namely the Thameslink through lines to be moved to the eastern side of the bridge (formely the site of the terminal platforms) and for the new platforms 1 and 2, now extending all the way across the bridge, to be introduced to service, albeit in a partially complete state.

Lester Hayes visited the station on 18th January 2011 to photograph the changes. For photographs from 2009 when the redevelopment was just starting please click here.

New platforms 1 & 2 looking north
The eastern side of the bridge, looking north-west, ably demonstrating that work is still very much in progress whilst the station is in use.

The new platforms 1 and 2 looking north from the new south end of the station. There will eventually be a passenger entrance on at the south end which will be very convenient for commuters working south of the Thames.
North end, etmporary footbridge
New decking on the western side of the existing bridge
At the north end of the station is a temporary footbridge, as seen here from the east side looking north-west.

Peeking into the western side of the bridge, which used to carry the through lines, at the new decking on the part of the bridge which has long been in use.
